Mobeen’s work The Last Breath presents a globe divided into two contrasting hemispheres. One half depicts a lush forest against a golden backdrop, where a canopy of trees provides shade and shelter, and the forest floor is adorned with a rich array of plants and flowers, suggesting a thriving, balanced ecosystem. In stark contrast, the other half of the globe reveals a desolate, barren landscape, stripped of its once-abundant foliage. An axe leans against a tree stump, a powerful symbol of the destructive forces of deforestation that have ravaged the land. This striking juxtaposition serves as a poignant commentary on the fragile balance of nature and the urgent need for environmental conservation.
Mobeen chose to use delicate line work to outline the scene, using a brush and ink to convey her message. The precise, careful lines mirror the inherent fragility of the natural world, suggesting that while nature may appear robust, it is equally vulnerable and directly affected by the way we interact with it. Just as the ink lines gently connect leaf to branch, flower to stem, and blade of grass to the ground, so too can the actions of destruction—like pulling a flower from its stem or taking an axe to the trunk of a tree—sever these connections in an irreversible way.
It takes centuries for a tree to reach its full glory, yet only moments to erase its legacy forever.
Mobeen’s use of fine lines emphasises the delicate nature of life and the need to protect it before it’s too late.
